Urban land in Fontinhas, Terceira Island.
The parish of Fontinhas is located four kilometres from the county town, on the eastern slope of the Serra do Cume. Located on the road to Praia da Vitória, to the northwest of these is composed of the places and sites of À Igreja, Areeiro, Barreiro, Cabouco, Canada do Pico, Coxo, Cruzeiro do Vicente, Cruzeiro Velho, Fontinha, Ribeiro do Marques and Santo António. Delimited by the parishes of São Sebastião, Santa Cruz, Lajes and São Brás, it is crossed by the Marques, Cruzeiro and Santo António streams.
A place of small fountains, which gave it its name, Fontinhas is one of the few parishes on the island that can be considered inland, since it has no contact with the sea.
Twice, Fontinhas was completely destroyed. This was due to the disasters that regularly plague the archipelago. On April 9, 1614, and then on June 15, 1841, nature came into action and practically wiped the parish off the map.
It was also hit by the great earthquake of 1 January 1980.
The present parish church, the current parish church, to which reference has been made above, dates from 1925. The previous one was brought down that same year, after a cyclone of enormous proportions. On the main altar, there are some images of great interest, including those of Our Lady of Pena, Saint Joseph and Saint Sebastian. The mosaic panels on the apse, acquired in 1969, allude to the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and Purification of the Virgin Mary and the Crucifixion and Death of the Divine Master in the arms of His Mother.
In addition to the parish church, the hermitage of Santo António deserves to be highlighted in terms of heritage. It was built at the beginning of the sixteenth century by Fr. Francisco Cardoso Leal. Located about 700m from the centre of the parish, it has a side balcony, housing type and bell. Over the centuries it has suffered great destitution due to earthquakes, fires and cyclones, and has served as a parish church on several occasions when it was under construction. It has beautiful images inside, among which Saint Anthony, Saint Amaro, Saint Cecilia, Saint Lucy, and Our Lady of Fatima stand out.
