Luz is an Azorean parish in the municipality of Santa Cruz da Graciosa, with an area of 11.70 km² and 683 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 58.4 inhabitants/km².
It is installed along the valley that by the northwest partof the Caldera massif from the rest of graciosa island. That same valley is traversed by a powerful drain of recent basaltic lavas, originated by the eruptions of Timon Peak, which produced a very rocky biscuit soil, in fact a coarse regolith, not proper to agriculture.
We can find in this parish, the hot end of Carapacho.
The growing interest in thermalism, particularly from the 1750s on, and the emergence of medical hydrology in the early 19th century led to the rediscovery of the waters. From the 1810s onto it, it began to be used regularly, and an excavation was made at the site, opening the crevice through which the water poured out and creating a barrier to prevent the entry of seawater at full tide. The structure then created is now underneath the terme building, being accessible by an internal staircase.
The municipality of Santa Cruz da Graciosa occupies the entire territory of Graciosa island and its islets (Islet of Praia, islet of Baixo, islet of Baleia and islet of The Seagull and other smaller islets), totaling 60.89 km² of area.
The municipality of Santa Cruz, as with the generality of the Azorean territory, has a settlement structure that, despite its apparent dispersion, is strongly conditioned by the road network. This oriented scattered settlement, typical of the areas of recent colonization, such as the islands, led to the urban structuring of Graciosa having been produced along major axes, corresponding to the valleys of the island, and, consequently, to the roads that along its long flow to the two villages of the island.
