The parish of São Brás faces the sea and the parishes of Porto Formos and Maia (municipality of Ribeira Grande) and Ribeira da Taínhas (municipality of Vila Franca do Campo).
The toponym of this parish originated in a sixteenth-century hermitage dedicated to São Brás. Gaspar Frutuoso, in his 'Saudades da Terra', tells us the following: 'a point called São Brás goes out to sea, because there is a hermitage of this saint on a high hill'.
The date of foundation of this locality is uncertain, however it seems that its settlement took place at the same time as that of Porto Formoso. The place of São Brás was a suffragan curacy of Porto Formoso until 1980, when it was elevated to the category of parish.
The parish of São Brás was linked to the struggles between absolutists and liberals, and is still preserved today in Roca do Louro, a natural cave that served as a hiding place for the people of this locality during the aforementioned struggles.
The parish church of this parish, dedicated to São Brás, began to be built in 1886 on land donated by the Count of Fonte Bela. However, this temple was only completed in 1961 with the construction of the bell towers.
