Located in the parish of São Bento, this parish has numerous infrastructures directed to the comfort of those who live there.
Urban parish with an area of 8.66 square Kms, develops from the readership, south to Caldeira Guilherme Moniz, north to Serra do Morião, facing northeast with the parish of Porto Judeu, east with the parish of Ribeirinha and west with the parish of Conceição.

The settlement is dispersed to the east through the regional road between Largo de S. Bento and Carreirinha and to the north through the Ladeira de S. Bento, Vale Linhares, S. Luís, to Pico Redondo. The following places are part of the parish: Achada, Arco, Cambalim, Canada da Ribeirinha, Carreirinha, Copins, Grota do Vale, Ladeira do Livramento, Ladeira de S. Bento, Largo de S. Bento, Reguinho, Pico Redondo, São Luís and Salto.
Elevated to an independent parish in 1572, although only parish registers are known since 1583, with S. Bento as its patron. It was at the request of Jacob of Bruges and Infante D. Henrique who landed on the island of Terceira in 1456, Álvaro Vaz de Meneses who received the fields between Grota do Vale and Porto Pipas and Gonçalo Ximenes Betencór and wife, from Madeira, settled in Vale de Linhares, which received this name because of the fact that both, not to be known, to have adopted the surnames of Gonçalo de Linhares and Violante Pires. From this nickname Linhares, the place where they resided came to be called Vale de Linhares, as it is still known today.

Not so many years ago it was little developed, but today it offers a pleasant and interesting aspect for the improvement that the dwellings have received by the construction of new buildings. In addition, it has a good road just rebuilt and expanded. Gonçalo Ximenes, by concession of Jacob of Bruges, according to our historians, took possession from Grota do Vale to Pico Redondo, settling in this area around 1460. The settlement of Achada (now the Expressway) took place on the grounds of the Viscount of Bruges, who had houses built where the first settlers lived, and began to work the fields. The village grows to have about 30 inhabitants who built the church of S. Teotónio, opened for worship on November 5, 1843. Of this new village, Father Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade said: 'The field of Achadas forms an immense valley, full of meadows again routed, in which a new settlement is being formed, which will soon be very populous and bright.' With the passage of time and adverse climate, there was the desertification of the place, the houses and the church were in ruins and the image of S. Teotónio was taken to the church of Posto Santo. Even today you can find the foundations of the church of S. Teotónio.

On the plateau of Achada, the first airstrip of Terceira Island was improvised, built by the British in the early 40s (1940-1943).
