São Bartolomeu dos Regatos is a rural parish in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo with an area of 26.44 km² and 1,983 inhabitants (2011), which corresponds to a population density of 75 inhabitants/km².
It is located in the south of the island of Terceira, about 7 km northwest of the city of Angra do Heroísmo, occupying a territory that extends from the coast to the eastern slope of the Serra de Santa Bárbara.
The parish was created around 1560, autonomizing the population nucleus that had developed around the place of Regatos since the 1470s.
The parish of São Bartolomeu is located in the south of the island of Terceira, occupying a roughly rectangular territory, although with a considerable enlargement in the part located in the interior of the island, which extends from the cliffs of the south coast to the central plateau and the southeast slope of the Serra de Santa Bárbara. To the west it borders the parish of Cinco Ribeiras; to the east with the parishes of São Mateus da Calheta, Terra Chã and Posto Santo; and to the north with the parish of Altares.
With the exception of its northwestern end, which is located on the slope of the Serra de Santa Bárbara, extending to the southeastern edge of the Caldera, the territory of the parish is part of the transition zone between the Santa Bárbara Massif and the Guilherme Moniz Massif, characterized by fissure volcanism, with the emission of very fluid basalts. Successive basaltic flows eventually covered the pre-existing geological structures, creating a plateau whose edge descends towards the south relatively abruptly (slopes of more than 40%), ending in an extensive, flattened coastal platform that descends gently to the coast. The coastline of the parish is marked by an almost linear coastal cliff whose altitude rarely exceeds 30 m, decreasing towards the east, approaching 15 m at Chanoca, bordering the parish of São Mateus da Calheta.
