Santa Bárbara is a rural parish in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, with an area of 16.43 km² and 1,274 inhabitants (2011), which corresponds to a population density of 77.5 inhabitants/km².
It is located on the southwest coast of the island of Terceira, about 13 km from the city of Angra do Heroísmo, with a territory that extends from the coast to the summit of the Serra de Santa Bárbara, the highest elevation on the island with a maximum altitude of 1,021 meters.
Santa Bárbara was one of the first parishes constituted in the municipality of Angra, before 1489 and still in the lifetime of Jácome de Bruges, the first captain-of-the donee in the Captaincy of Angra. Until the end of the nineteenth century it was called Santa Bárbara das Nove Ribeiras, since its initial nucleus was located around Ribeira das Nove.
The parish of Santa Bárbara is located in the southwest of the island of Terceira, occupying a roughly triangular territory that extends from the cliffs of the southwest coast of the island to the ridges of the Serra de Santa Bárbara, at more than 900 m above mean sea level. It borders to the northeast with the parish of Doze Ribeiras, from which it is separated by the course of Ribeira das Dez; to the north, along the edge of the Caldeira de Santa Bárbara, on the ridges of the Serra de Santa Bárbara, with the parish of Altares; to the southeast it is separated from the parish of Cinco Ribeiras by the course of Ribeira da Praia.
